EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New York Giants have waived third-year running back Andre Williams in reaching the 53-man roster limit. The Giants also announced Saturday that placekicker Josh Brown was put on the NFLs reserve-suspended list and tight end Will Johnson was placed on injured reserve with a shoulder injury. The move with Williams was the most surprising. The fourth-round draft pick in 2014 led the team in rushing as a rookie with 721 yards and seven touchdowns. He was limited to 257 yards as the Giants used four running backs in 2015. He played in all 32 games in his two seasons with New York.A slimmed-down Williams had 95 yards on 25 carries in the preseason, making him the second-leading rusher behind Bobby Rainey.Andre is a guy that played some good football for us, coach Ben McAdoo said. Were going to miss him. It was another one of those really tough decisions to make. The move leaves the Giants with five running backs: Rashad Jennings, Shane Vereen, Orleans Darkwa, rookie Paul Perkins and Rainey, who doubles as a returner.Johnson, signed as an unrestricted free agent, missed the final three preseason games. New York was hoping he would help the blocking at tight end.The move with Brown was mandatory. The 37-year-old was suspended by the league for the opening game because of a violation of its personal conduct policy following his arrest in 2015 on a domestic violence allegation.Brown will be eligible to return on Sept. 12, a day after the Giants open their season in Dallas. The Giants also terminated the contracts of offensive lineman Adam Gettis and defensive tackle Jermelle Cudjo, and waived 15 other players, including wide receiver Geremy Davis, a sixth-round pick in 2015. He played in 10 regular-season games last season. The release of Davis means the Giants are keeping Tavarres King, who was on the practice squad last year, and free agent Roger Lewis Jr. King caught three of the Giants four touchdown passes in the preseason and Lewis had the other.Roger and T.K. are two guys that really took a big jump, McAdoo said. They hit the ground running in the offseason, made tremendous strides and got better and improved. They pushed each other, along with the rest of that group. There was great competition in that group. Also waived were quarterback Logan Thomas; receivers Darius Powe and Anthony Dable; offensive linemen Dillon Farrell and Ryan Seymour; defensive tackle Louis Nix;, defensive end Stansly Maponga; linebackers Brad Bars and Ishaq Williams; cornerbacks Leon McFadden, Michael Hunter and Donte Deayon; and safeties Justin Currie and Andrew Adams.Offensive linemen Emmett Cleary (finger) and Jake Rodgers (ankle) were waived injured.Rookie tight end Ryan Malleck was waived off of injured reserve, where he was placed earlier this week.---AP NFL websites: http://pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP-NFLStan Smith Sale NZ . Padres manager Andy Green credited his 23-year-old right-handers rapidly improving sinker. He varies it in speed from 91 to 97 mph, and it has serious movement, Green said. He still hasnt completely harnessed it yet. Sometimes it runs horizontally instead of diving, but he is getting closer and closer to understanding how to move it the way he wants. The most novel DP came in the seventh inning, when Perdomo gave up a one-out single before Ichiro Suzuki lined out to the pitcher, who trotted to first base to double off the runner.A little bit of luck in there, Miami manager Don Mattingly said. There were some balls that were hit firm.Five Marlins hit into double plays, and they went 6-4-3, 4-6-3, 6-4-3, 6-3, 1, and 5-4-3. The six DPs were a nine-inning team record for the Padres defensively, and a Marlins batting record.Perdomo lowered his ERA from 6.24 to 5.84 and beat Miami for the second time this year.He commanded his sinker well and got us to ground out, said the Marlins Dee Gordon, who was erased twice on the bases by double plays and hit into a DP. Hats off to him. He pitched a great game and kept us off balance.Perdomo walked three, struck out three and retired the final five batters in order for the Padres first complete game since Tyson Ross threw one June 20, 2015. He didnt realize until after the game that the Padres had turned six double plays. It was a big help, the Dominican said in Spanish.Ryan Schimpf hit an RBI triple, singled and scored for the Padres and finnished 7 for 10 in the series.ddddddddddddThe Marlins hurt their wild-card chances by going 2-4 on their homestand while scoring only 13 runs. Seeking their first playoff berth since 2003, they begin a seven-game trip Monday at the Mets.As bad as it looks right now in this storm were in, its still doable, Mattingly said. Weve got to grow up, have an approach and be ready to play Monday. We cant go into New York dragging our heads. We have to continue to play. These are things were going to learn about this club. If were going to move forward as an organization, these are the things we have to do.Justin Nicolino (2-6) allowed three runs in six innings in his first start since July 6. He was called up from Triple-A to replace Andrew Cashner, who was scratched because of a finger blister. The Padres rallied from a 1-0 deficit with two runs in the fourth. Alex Dickerson, a late entry in the lineup when Wil Myers was scratched because of a stomach virus, doubled to start the comeback. Schimpf tripled off the center field wall, and Luis Sardinas hit a two-out RBI double.Schimpf scored in the sixth when he was hit by a pitch, took second on a wild pitch and came home on a two-out single by Adam Rosales.Doubles by J.T. Realmuto and Xavier Scruggs in the second scored the Marlins run.TRAINERS ROOMSS Sardinas rolled his left wrist diving for a hit in the seventh. He stayed in the game after consulting with a trainer.I had a little scare, but Im OK, he said.UP NEXTMarlins: RHP Jose Fernandez (13-7, 2.91) is scheduled to start Monday at the Mets against RHP Rafael Montero (0-0, 11.57) to begin a four-game series.
