LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Louisville is looking to develop some take-charge guys early this season, and several candidates are emerging.Freshman forward V.J. King scored 17 points and Deng Adel added 16, including eight during Louisvilles 10-0 run to close the first half, to help the 12th-ranked Cardinals pull away from William & Mary for a 91-58 victory Monday night.Louisville (2-0) initially struggled against the Tribes up-tempo style, going scoreless for 3:06 and allowing William & Mary to pull to 34-31 with 2:13 remaining in the first half. Adel took charge over the final 1:31 with five free throws and a 3-pointer just before the break during the spurt that gave the Cardinals some space.Coach (Rick Pitino) kept telling me to keep shooting it because once you get out of the slump, the shots are going to fall, said Adel, who went 4 of 9 from the field and made all seven free throws after scoring just six points in Louisvilles opener.Once you see the ball go in the basket, it helps your confidence.Louisville then outscored William & Mary 10-2 over the first 4 1/2 minutes of the second half to open a 54-33 lead, and held the Tribe without a basket for nearly 6 minutes.William & Mary coach Tony Shaver pointed to Louisvilles late first-half run as the turning point for his team. Our execution those last 2 minutes of the half was terrible and we paid the price for that, Shaver said. We hadnt played that well the first 18 minutes and its a three-point game, so you have to feel good about that. But that spurt there really changed the complexion of the game.King helped the Cardinals cruise home by hitting a couple of 3-pointers down the stretch. If we just all play together and find each other, we all get easy shots and open shots like we did tonight, said King, who also had just six points on Friday. All of us can score, so (opponents) have to pick and choose who they have to defend.Quentin Snider and Jaylen Johnson, who scored a team-high 19 points in Louisvilles opener, each added 13 for the Cardinals, who held William & Mary (1-1) to 23 percent shooting in the second half and 31 percent overall. Mangok Mathiang had 10 rebounds and Johnson nine as the Cardinals topped the Tribe 49-42 on the boards. We played terrific defense tonight, Pitino said. We did a really good job of putting the pressure on and not fouling.Omar Prewitt and Nathan Knight had 14 points apiece for the Tribe, who shot 6 of 29 from 3-point range in losing their first meeting with Louisville in 64 years.THE BIG PICTUREWilliam & Mary: One game after making a school-record 22 steals against Bridgewater, the Tribe managed just two against Louisville. More importantly, they committed 16 turnovers that led to 22 points.Louisville: The Cardinals shot 46 percent and saw some bright spots in their perimeter shooting. They went 6 of 12 from beyond the arc in the second half after going 4 of 16 in the first 20 minutes, which followed a 3-of-15 showing in the opener.RIM PROTECTORSMathiang, playing his second game since December because of a foot injury, had five of Louisvilles 11 blocks to match a career high set Feb. 14, 2015, against North Carolina State. Cardinals guard Donovan Mitchell had four blocks.ROUGH HOMECOMINGWilliam & Mary had two players from Kentucky in guard/forward and team captain Prewitt and forward Jack Whitman. Their returns began with promise before Louisville took over and left them with 17 combined points. We just didnt execute, and that was probably more us than them, Prewitt said. I wanted to come out and play well with a lot of family here, and I knew a lot of Louisville players. It was exciting to play here.POLL IMPLICATIONSThursdays home game against Long Beach State might have a bigger impact on Louisvilles ranking next week.UP NEXTWilliam & Mary: Hosts Presbyterian on Saturday.Louisville: Hosts Long Beach State on Thursday. The Cardinals lead the series 2-0, with their most recent win over the 49ers coming on Dec. 30, 2014 (63-48).---The APs College Basketball page: collegebasketball.ap.orgLuke Voit Jersey . 10 VCU 85-67 on Thursday night at the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. The Seminoles (4-0) have scored at least 80 points in each of their games. Don Mattingly Yankees Jersey . Now, correct me if Im wrong but I saw one official distinctly pointing at the net indicating a good goal but after an inconclusive review they overturned the goal. Shouldnt the ruling on the ice (good goal) stand after an inconclusive review? Why was this overturned? James Veaudry Pembroke, ON -- Hey Kerry, Youll get a lot of these, but why was the Montreal goal against Nashville Saturday night overturned? Eller puts the puck on net and the on ice ruling from the ref behind the net is a Montreal goal. https://www.cheapyankees.com/431g-cameron-maybin-jersey-yankees.html . A lawyer for MLB, Matthew Menchel, confirmed Wednesday the league dropped its case against Biogenesis of America, its owner Anthony Bosch and several other individuals. The lawsuit had accused Biogenesis and Bosch of conspiring with players to violate their contracts by providing them with banned performance-enhancing substances. Johnny Damon Jersey . Coach Tom Thibodeau says the former MVP will probably start travelling with the team in the next few weeks. Rose tore the meniscus in his right knee at Portland in November and was ruled out for the remainder of the season by the Bulls. Mike Mussina Yankees Jersey . -- Los Angeles Lakers guard Jordan Farmar will be out for roughly four weeks after tearing his left hamstring.ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Alex Cobb left the hospital and went home Sunday, one day after he was hit in the right ear by a line drive. The Rays announced during their game against Kansas City that Cobb had been released from Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg. The team said he will be placed on the seven-day concussion list. There was no timetable for when Cobb will rejoin the rotation. Cobb texted teammates Sunday morning, including pitcher Matt Moore, saying he had a headache but would soon be out of the hospital. In a message posted on his Twitter account, Cobb thanked Rays head athletic trainer Ron Porterfield and the doctors at Bayfront, and said that he "Woke up with only a minor headache." Cobb was struck by a liner off the bat of Kansas Citys Eric Hosmer in the fifth inning of Saturdays game but remained conscious the whole time. He was taken off the field on a stretcher. Moore was among a group of around 15 players, which included Hosmer and former Cobb teammates and current Royals James Shields and Elliot Johnson, who went to the hospital after Saturdays game. "I think he was very happy to see how many people wanted to come and see him," Moore said. It was a tough week for Cobb, who left the team after starting Monday nights game against Boston due to the death of his grandmother. He was informed of the death after the game in which the 25-year old gave up a season-high six runs over four innings in a 10-8, 14-inning loss to the Red Sox. This latest incident of a pitcher being hit by a batted ball is sure to spark more discussions about new pitching protection equipment. "Whoever comes up with the solution for this, theyre never going to have to work again in their lives," Rays pitcher David Price said. "Its scary. We know about that. You think about it, and then you dont think about it when youre on the mound. But when you seee it happen, and you see line drives and hard groundballs up the middle, it definitely cross your mind.dddddddddddd." Moore said he would be willing to wear headgear if it was developed. "A cricket helmet, or whatever it was, I would give it my best effort to make sure I pitch with that," Moore said. "If I could prevent something like that by wearing something, without a doubt I would." While pitching for Oakland last Sept. 5, Brandon McCarthy sustained what were described at the time as life-threatening injuries when he was struck in the head by a line drive off the bat of Erick Aybar of the Angels. The pitcher had an epidural hemorrhage, brain contusion and a skull fracture. Emergency surgery was performed that night and he was released from the hospital six days later. McCarthy, now with Arizona, is taking medication and says hes confident hell be fine after he recently collapsed at a restaurant with a seizure related to the head injury he sustained while pitching last September. The Diamondbacks right-hander underwent extensive examinations at the Mayo Clinic after the episode Monday. He was having dinner with his wife at a Phoenix restaurant when he passed out. "You never want to see anybody go through that," Shields said. "You just never know whats going to come out of it. You look at McCarthy, he walked off the field. Next thing you know, theyre doing surgery on him." Blue Jays starter J.A. Happ was also struck by a liner against the Rays last month at Tropicana Field and sustained a skull fracture. Happ was discharged from an area hospital the following day. The left-hander hurt his knee when he fell to the mound and remains on the disabled list. Rays reliever Jamey Wright feels it is imperative that the issue continue to receive serious review. "We dont want somebody getting killed before something is done about it," Wright said. ' ' '
