While goalkeeper Hope Solo thinks she was banned from the national team for her stance on equal pay, coach Jill Ellis said it was for the sum total of actions.Over time, theres been off-the-field distractions, and the federation has taken action, Ellis said. Each time action has been taken, theres been made clear an expectation that this would the last time such a step would be necessary. Sadly, Hopes postgame comments forced us to make a significant decision. It wasnt a decision just made about comments. It was a sum total of actions that have unfortunately shown a negative light on our program.Ellis discussed the suspension for the first time in a Q & A interview published on U.S. Soccers website.Last month, Solo was suspended for six months for what U.S. Soccer termed conduct counter to the organizations principles.Solo called Sweden a bunch of cowards after the Swedes beat the U.S. 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the quarters of the Olympic tournament, and U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati said those comments were unacceptable.Solo was previously suspended for 30 days in 2015 for her conduct after a training camp incident. She will not be eligible for selection to the national team until February.Solo said she believes the U.S. Soccer Federation terminated her contract as retaliation for her stance on equal pay.Solos remarks, made last week after she was notified of her suspension, were aired for the first time Friday in the final episode of the documentary series Keeping Score. The series follows Solo and fellow U.S. womens national team players Megan Rapinoe and Crystal Dunn before, during and after the Rio Olympics.?I feel like Im being pushed out, because it cant be based off performance, my health, she said in the episode. It cant be based off anything but they dont like me ... because they know Ive been fighting so hard for equal pay.Theyre going to use my comments as an excuse to get rid of me forever so that they dont have to deal with such a strong voice and opposition to field conditions and playing conditions and pay. I think Im just a thorn in their side, and its time for them to cut their losses.Solo was among five members of the USWNT that filed a wage-discrimination action against U.S. Soccer in April. Among its claims, the filing said the womens team was being paid about a quarter of what the men earn despite generating nearly $20 million more revenue last year.Ellis said in the U.S. Soccer interview that the team will look to develop goalkeepers in the run-up to the 2019 World Cup in France. After the Olympics the plan was always to prepare for 2019 and that means investing in the other goalkeepers and getting them playing time. Thats still the process and its the same for every position, she said. Everything right now is building towards 2019 and our future.Information from The Associated Press was used in this report. Allister Coetzee insists he should not be blamed entirely for the Springboks disastrous year.South Africa complete what has been a dreadful 2016 against Wales in Cardiff on Saturday with their coachs future in some doubt.?Its been a tough year and I can take responsibility for a lot of things, Coetzee told a press conference. But I only got started in April and there are challenges in South African rugby that are unique to us.Theres no excuse for the poor performance, but there are discussions happening and it is looking really positive. This is a great opportunity to address the problems and clean out the wounds. We need to diagnose and treat the symptoms of it.The Boks have lost seven of their 11 Tests this year -- including a record 57-15 defeat to New Zealand and a first-ever home loss to Ireland -- and on Saturday were beaten by Italy for the first time in 13 attempts. In the 21 years since our World Cup win in 1995 weve only had four good years, and if we continue what weve been doing youre not going to see any different result, continued Coetzee.Weve got this chance to make South African rugby come first and become aligned. There has to be a South African way of playing and that is starting to come around. Theres a lot of daark clouds, but the silver lining is there I believe.dddddddddddd.?In the wake of that 20-18 defeat in Florence, SA Rugby president Mark Alexander released a statement questioning results and performances.Alexander also promised an end-of-season review following the Test against Wales, who have been holding their own inquest after squeezing past Japan 33-30 on Saturday. We are low in confidence and well try our best to try and fix the problems, added Coetzee, however. Saturday was dreadful and no-one can be happy with that result. We are in a bit of a hole at the moment and the buck stops with me. It is my responsibility to get the team out of that hole.Coetzee led Super rugbys Stormers for five years until 2015 before succeeding Heyneke Meyer as Springboks coach.Asked about his own future after the Wales game, Coetzee replied: I have signed a four-year contract and Ill do my best to make sure we perform this weekend.Whatever happens, happens. But Ive got a four-year deal and we want to end this tour on a good note. I can promise you this weekend is going to be a physical battle decided by small margins. ' ' '
