The Winnipeg Goldeyes got a great start from lefty Pete Gehle on Saturday night. Too bad his teammates didnt give him any run support. Gehle allowed only two earned runs on five scattered hits through seven innings, but an unearned run in the sixth was the difference, as the Quebec Capitales defeated the Goldeyes 3-2. With the loss, the Goldeyes fell to 25-27, five and a half games back of first place Fargo in the American Associations North Division and are now 2-9 in Saturday night games. "We just didnt capitalize tonight," Goldeyes pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea told Paul Edmonds on the post-game show on TSN 1290. "We took a step forward with that big win on Friday night and then took two steps backward tonight. "We wasted a solid, solid outing by Pete Gehle tonight. A couple of miscues on the infield cost us a couple of runs and that was the difference tonight." After Quebec opened the scoring with a solo home run from 22-year-old Canadian Royce Consigli in the third, the Goldeyes tied it up in the fourth as Tyler Graham singled, Amos Ramon walked and then Ray Sadler singled to bring home Graham. In the fifth, the Fish took a 2-1 lead, as Luis Alen singled, went to third on a single by Graham and an error by Quebec shortstop Jeff Helps and then scored on a wild pitch by Capitales starter Jeff Duda. Quebec tied it with an unearned run in the sixth and then went ahead 3-2 in the seventh. With two out, Josue Peley singled and scored on a double by Asif Shah and that did it. A game the Goldeyes could have stolen went to Quebec late. The Goldeyes scratched out only six hits and Graham was the only player with a multi-hit game. Graham had two hits in four trips and scored a run. Former Goldeye Tim Griffin (1-0, 3.91 ERA) got the win, while Chris Cox (4.50 ERA) picked up his fourth save. Gehle (3-3, 3.81 ERA) was the hard-luck loser for the Goldeyes. "Im not even looking at that L, Pete Gehle was the best player on the field for us tonight," said Vermilyea. "Hes just getting better and better." The Goldeyes and Capitales play the final game of this four-game series on Sunday afternoon at 12:05 p.m. CDT at Quebec Stadium.
