NEW YORK -- After the final whistle of his 50th and final game with Chelsea, Rafa Benitez walked toward the visitors dugout at Yankee Stadium, raised his left hand in a small acknowledgement to someone in the crowd and disappeared into the tunnel. "A lot of fans, they were supporting in the end," he said. "Some of them, maybe we couldnt change their minds. But we did our job." Far away from the jeering supporters at Londons Stamford Bridge, Benitez completed his brief but productive stint as manager with a 5-3 loss to Manchester City in a season-ending friendly Saturday night. Distrusted by Chelsea fans following his tenure at Liverpool, Benitez never settled in after he was hired on a seven-month contract in November to replace Roberto Di Matteo, who was sacked six months after leading Chelsea to its first Champions League title. Still, Benitez did manage to lead Chelsea to the Europa League title during his short time with the team. "A lot of fans, they were supporting in the end," he said. "Some of them, maybe we couldnt change their minds. But we did our job." Outgoing Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho is expected to return to Chelsea for a second stint, the ninth managerial change under owner Roman Abramovich since 2004. Benitez appears headed to Napoli. Benitez guided the Blues to the semifinals of the FA Cup and League Cup and a third-place finish in the Premier League, ensuring the clubs 11th straight Champions League appearance. The Spaniards title was interim manager, and very quickly it became apparent he wouldnt be kept on. "A final, two semifinals, a trophy, top three," he said after Saturdays match, beaming. "Everybody was saying, He has to do this. He has to do that. We did it." "The circumstances were special, still we did our job as professionals," he said. Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis was quoted Friday as saying Benitez will take over as coach of his club from Walter Mazzarri, who left to replace Andrea Stramaccioni at Inter Milan. "Its true that I will go back to London and will try to enjoy with the family for a while," Benitez said, avoiding a direct reply. City also is changing managers. Roberto Mancini was fired on May 13, exactly a year after leading City to its first Premier League title since 1968, leaving assistant Brian Kidd in charge for the teams two-city U.S. tour, which began when City beat Chelsea 4-3 Thursday in St. Louis. Malaga coach Manuel Pellegrini appears likely to take over at City. In Saturdays match, which was largely devoid of tough tackles and less physical than many training sessions, Samir Nasri scored twice for City and Ramires had two goals for Chelsea, which was playing its 76th match of the season. City built a 2-0 lead on goals by Gareth Barry in the third minute and Nasri in the 29th. Ramires scored for Chelsea in the 46th and 69th minutes around James Milners goal for City in the 55th. Nasri made it 4-2 in the 74th, Juan Mata curled in a free kick for Chelsea eight minutes later, and Edin Dzeko bounced a 30-yard shot past Petr Cech in the 84th. "The fans here today and in St. Louis have watched two great games, with lots of goals, lots of attacking football," Barry said. "Im sure theres a few defensive coaches who are not too happy." The match was played four days after Manchester City announced it will partner with the New York Yankees to launch New York City FC, which will become Major League Soccers 20th team in 2015. While planning for a new venue, the expansion team could start play at Yankee Stadium, which can fit a football pitch that the team says is 100-by-64 metres (110-by-70 yards). "All us boys like travelling to the U.S.," City goalkeeper Joe Hart said. "MLS is growing and growing and growing, and for Manchester City its the same thing. Were growing as well. So its good to do it together." The crowd of 39,462 -- the majority Chelsea fans -- outnumbered the more than the 38,202 people who attended Chelseas friendly against Paris Saint-Germain in New York last July, but was below the 49,474 for a Real Madrid-AC Milan match the following month. (STATS) -- San Diego has been selected as the favorite in the Pioneer Football League in each of the last six years, holding a one-point edge over Dayton in this seasons voting by the leagues head coaches. If a vote was taken now after the halfway point of PFL action, those coaches might change their tune.Thats because San Diego has been dominant on both sides of the ball, and that strong play doesnt figure to let up Saturday when it hosts Valparaiso. The Toreros (5-1) have thoroughly outplayed opponents in opening 4-0 in PFL play. They got things started with a crucial 34-22 victory over Dayton on Sept. 24 and won their next three by a combined score of 134-20.Entering this week, San Diego ranks No. 1 in the FCS in scoring defense (13.3 points per game) and passing efficiency defense (86.13 rating) and sits seventh in total defense (274.2 yards per game).I think the reason as a defensive whole were successful against the pass is because we have a lot of team chemistry, junior defensive back Max Michaels said. A lot of the guys have returned from last year, and we all sort of know where each others going to be and what to expect from one another given any sort of play.Offensively, the Toreros pace the PFL in scoring (35.2) and total offense (457.7). Theyre stacked on that side of the ball with quarterback Anthony Lawrence, running back Jonah Hodges, tight end Ross Dwelley and wide receiver Brian Riley leading the way.Lawrence tops the PFL in pass efficiency (166.4) and completion percentage (68.8) while throwing for 1,500 yards and 11 touchdowns to just three interceptions. Hodges leads the league with 681 rushing yards, 180.2 all-purpoose yards per game, 10 total TDs and nine rushing scores.dddddddddddd Dwelley ranks first with seven TD catches and Riley is second with 96.8 receiving yards per game.(San Diego) is a team that really doesnt have any weaknesses, Valparaiso coach Dave Cecchini said. They have a dominant offense, they can run the football ... they throw it all over the place and can be explosive. ... Nobodys been able to get anything going against them, so right now theyre the team to beat without question.San Diegos ability to score and hold down opponents doesnt bode well for Valparaiso (3-4, 2-2), which ranks eighth in the 11-team PFL in both scoring offense (24.0) and scoring defense (31.1). Add in the facts that the Toreros have won 25 straight at home in PFL play and 12 in a row in this series while averaging 47.9 points and allowing 14.6, and it would appear the Crusaders are in for a long day.Valparaiso, though, is an improved team. It entered this season with 50 losses in 56 league games since 2009, but the Crusaders are one victory away from winning three PFL contests for the first time in 13 years. The Toreros, meanwhile, have gone 7-1 in league action in each of the past five seasons. The thing about the PFL is that any team can come out any week and hand you a loss and were well aware of that, Michaels said. Its really tough to go undefeated in this league. Weve been handed one loss the past couple of years, so just kind of staying focused on that and realizing that the loss can come any week and each team is good. cheap falcons jerseys cheap ravens jerseys cheap bills jerseys cheap bears jerseys cheap bengals jerseys cheap cowboys jerseys cheap lions jerseys cheap texans jerseys cheap colts jerseys cheap jaguars jerseys cheap chiefs jerseys cheap rams jerseys cheap dolphins jerseys cheap vikings jerseys cheap saints jerseys cheap giants jerseys cheap jets jerseys cheap eagles jerseys cheap steelers jerseys cheap 49ers jerseys ' ' '
